Houston County Buffer Program: Overall, the landowners in Houston County were cooperative with the Minnesota Buffer Law. We had landowners who planted pollinator mixes, grass mixes and hay/alfalfa strips along the public waters. These were effective ways to meet the requirements of the Buffer Law, while also meeting other conservation goals or objectives, such as enhancing the potential for wildlife habitat and mitigating negative impacts from flooding, erosion and sedimentation. Installing these buffers serves to protect our water resources, improve riparian conditions and provide habitat for an array of wildlife species from deer and upland birds, to beneficial insects and pollinators.
